Artist Statement

My art is created consciously as a reflection of our political climate and relationship to nature. I am driven to create based on my experiences interacting in this world as a woman. I share stories in my art with my use of repetitive patterns and animal imagery. My work is heavily influenced by the female experience and the emotions intertwined with these experiences. I set the tone for each piece by carefully selecting the colors (often red and feminine pinks), figures, animals, and recognizable shapes to symbolize my reflections. I am constantly ruminating on our relationship with nature and find inspiration in life’s questions pushing myself to connect more to the natural world around me.

I am inspired by my Appalachian ancestry and my experiences living on the West coast. I was raised with life lessons that hardened my family because of our history in poverty while balancing the new world lessons I learned after moving to Los Angeles and Seattle in adulthood. The dichotomy of these life experiences create sweet spots for inspiration that motivate me to express the inner turmoil of holding opposing truths.  I make my pieces using gouache, acrylic, oils and embellish my pieces with collages of magazine clippings to add contemporary elements to my work.
